The 30-ton, six-foot-high bronze statue of a World War I soldier mounted on a polished granite block was moved from Railroad Park in 2003. The plaza features a 20-ton triangle-shaped rose granite stone with a plaque listing the names of 161 area veterans who lost their lives in World War II. The tri-county Memorial Plaza which includes Williams, Divide, and McKenzie counties, recognizes veterans from World War I, World War II, and the Korea and Vietnam Wars. William Mott is buried at Riverview Cemetery, along with hundreds of other veterans. A true patriot, he stated, "If I were a young man, I would be in the ranks." These were his last words as he collapsed and died a few minutes later. In 1917, just prior to leaving his home to attend the Memorial Day services, Civil War veteran William Mott asked to have the flag hung in front of his house. In the early years, the graves of veterans were decorated with flags and strewn with flowers. As early as 1898, newspapers described the observance of Decoration Day, later Memorial Day, at 9th Avenue West. Veterans have been honored with special ceremonies for many years at Riverview Cemetery. Green Acres Addition was added in 1973 and in 1978, by a vote of the people, the City of Williston also became caretaker of Hillside Memory Gardens, located 1 1/2 miles north of the City. The City of Williston assumed responsibility for the care of Riverview in 1955, along with St. Williston Cemetery was privately owned until the Riverview Cemetery Association purchased the grounds in 1916 from G.
The monument marking the gravesite lists an incorrect date of death. They were followed to their final resting place by members of the Oriental Trading Company of Havre, Montana, and their interpreter. These workers were interred in Williston Cemetery on November 21, 1901. In November 1901, a westbound freight train crashed into a Great Northern Railway work train near Culbertson, Montana, killing 11 Japanese workers. In 1902, Potter's Field was established by County Commissioners for those unable to afford burial costs for their loved ones. The first map of the Williston Cemetery was platted in 1901 by surveyor, J.C. Thomas and Judd Pettis are buried in Riverview.

Cates who died at the age of 94 in 1922 is also buried in Riverview Cemetery. Cates prepared his body for burial and young Gustave was interred on the hill just north of the then-fledgling village of Little Muddy, later known as Williston. The son of George and Louise Marelius, Gustave died of appendicitis at the boarding house of pioneer homesteader, Fannie Cates. Riverview Cemetery, formerly known as Williston Cemetery, had its beginning with the death and burial of 13-year-old Gustave Marelius on September 2, 1887.
